From a young age, I have harboured a profound aspiration to become a midwife. At the tender age of two and a half, I witnessed the birth of my younger brother, and my father accompanied me to the hospital, where I was privileged to observe my sibling through a monitor. Although I was unable to articulate my desire at that time, I was certain that, as I matured, I would pursue a career in the healthcare industry, dedicated to the nurturing and care of infants.

My grandmother and father frequently spoke of my great-grandmother, a revered village midwife. In 1999, upon taking my midwife’s oath, my grandmother bestowed upon me a cherished gift—my grandfather’s 1929 edition of the Hungarian Midwife’s Book. Over the ensuing two decades, this book has remained a constant companion.

Reflecting on the trajectory of maternity leave since my brother’s birth, I am acutely aware of the significant transformations that have occurred. The ban on fathers from participating in obstetrics and the observation of newborns on monitors have left an indelible mark on the landscape of childbirth. At times, I am reminded of the immense fortune that befell me when the developmental process surrounding childbirth aligned with my chosen career path.

Following my high school graduation and acquisition of a basic health qualification in 1996, I embarked on a rigorous academic journey at the Kossuth Zsuzsa Health Vocational School in Midwifery. It was there that I successfully earned my midwifery diploma in 1999. During my studies and early career as a novice midwife, I had the privilege of working in various hospitals across Budapest, gradually transitioning from the maternity ward to the delivery room.

My midwifery creed was profoundly influenced by my tenure at the renowned Szent István Hospital, spanning from 1999 to 2016. Each birth presents unique challenges, and the ever-evolving theory and practice alone cannot provide adequate assurance. Consequently, I firmly believe in the significance of continuous professional development.

To maintain the utmost relevance of my knowledge, I have diligently completed the Peter Cerny Foundation neonatal resuscitation course every five years, resulting in three successful completions. This commitment ensures that I am equipped with the most up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge. Furthermore, I actively participate in midwifery conferences and specialised training programs, including PAF (Positive Attitude Formation) trainings.

Breastfeeding and childbirth communication have become areas of particular expertise for me. The birth of my daughter in 2011 marked a pivotal moment in my professional journey. The culmination of years of accumulated knowledge, akin to a complex puzzle, finally came into focus, and the words I spoke to mothers in labour acquired a profound significance. My personal experiences and the invaluable feedback from mothers who have entrusted me with their care and returned for subsequent births have reinforced the notion that childbirth has undergone significant transformations since the birth of my brother.

It fills me with immense joy to contribute positively to the delivery room environment, ensuring that childbirth is not only safe but also that every moment remains etched as a cherished memory for mothers.
