Andrology, also known as men's health, primarily deals with the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility, fertility disorders, and sexual dysfunctions in men—such as ejaculation and erectile problems. It also encompasses the treatment of male contraception and issues related to male menopause. These areas are often interconnected, as a single underlying cause may manifest through multiple symptoms.

What Does the Field of Andrology Cover?

Andrology is a branch of medical science focused on diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the male reproductive system. Andrologists concentrate on issues related to men’s health and reproductive functions, including sperm quality, libido, and erectile function.

To diagnose conditions, andrologists perform a wide range of tests, such as blood and urine tests, sperm analysis (spermiogram), and ultrasound imaging. Treatments may include medication, hormone therapy, surgical interventions, or growth hormone treatments.

Andrology plays a crucial role in maintaining male health, including preventing and treating diseases of the male reproductive system. As men age, they often face urological and andrological challenges such as prostate enlargement, decreased libido, and male menopause.

The field of andrology is continually advancing with the development of new diagnostic and treatment methods, placing greater emphasis on personalized care for patients. Andrologists often collaborate with other specialists, including urologists, endocrinologists, surgeons, and experts from other fields, to provide the best possible care for patients.

Spermiogram

Sperm analysis is an integral part of infertility evaluation for male partners. After a period of 3–5 days of abstinence, sperm collection is done either on-site or using a sample brought in. The samples are evaluated with a high-precision sperm analyzer, followed by bacteriological testing. Sperm analysis determines factors such as motility, quantity, and the proportion of normal-shaped cells. This examination is not included as part of a general andrological consultation.
